The first schedule looks good to me, a few thoughts:
1) 9:00 start: Even with a 8:00 to 8:55 choral/band class this would still be longer than the current early bird.
2) ½ lunch: Most models that were examined had a positive experience with the ½ hour lunch. Discussion centered around a possible during this period. 45 minutes does seem short even if one wanted to plan a class, specifically choral and band as the students would need to eat resulting in a extremely truncated period.
3) These two changes would result in a 3:10 finish. This would be helpful for after school gym scheduling and extracurricular practices as it is a similar end time to current scheduling.
How about a hybrid. Please let me know what you think!! We would only end at 3:35 twice a week every other day would end at 3:05!!

Tutorial following lunch may be poorly attended...? Thoughts
Good point: It really could be placed anywhere.
(Ann) I like the 9:00 a.m. start. Although we will all adapt over time, the fewer "odd" numbers that we have in our daily schedule, the more likely students are to be on time. Many students leave the school during their spares.
The comment about attendance after lunch does seem to be a good point. I am still unclear about the tutorial. I understand that it will be used to keep our at-risk students up-to-date and that it is also available for assemblies and other cross-graded activities. Will every student be assigned to a tutorial? Will most teachers have a tutorial class? Will attendance be required? Will many of our students treat it as they do our present homeroom meetings?
One of the other suggestions that we seemed enthusiatic about at the time was adding five minutes for the opening exercises in period 1 and announcements in period 2/3. Is this still a consideration? The loss of that time is a recurring complaint among classroom teachers, and it becomes a full-blown issue every three or four years.
I told you that I was hoping to talk to someone who is involved in libraries in PVSD. We managed to have a quick conversation this morning. She was in that school division at the time they changed their schedule and school year. She said that starting after Labour Day has had a positive effect on school starts for the majority, and that they have noticed fewer late starts from students whose homes are on reserves. She added that, as a division, they have tried to limit the number of three and four days weeks: this has become a conscious and determined choice.
(Dean) Here's some of the information from Bethelem in Saskatoon. The 360 class they have sounds interesting - it might help keep track of kids have a postive affect Regular day
period one 8:50 - 9:47
Period two 9:53 - 10:49
360 10:59 - 11:14
Period 3 11:19 - 12:16
Lunch from 12:16 to 1:05
Period 4 1:05 - 2:02
Period 5 2:07 - 3:05
Thursday's
Classes are shortened to 40 or 45 minutes which allows for 1 hour to be with our 360 (mentorship group.) lunch is later from 12:30 - 1:20
In 360 we read announcements have school masses, assemblies and pep rallies. We work on social justice topics and have some bonding time as well. The teacher(s) say with the same group of students for 4 years as to build a bond outside of a class setting.
